Portrait of a Brunette

Since I'm in a painting mood this past few weeks, I did a few sketches and artworks. With this one, my intention was to get a cartoon/anime/manga style while the colouring, more to a semi-realistic approach. Juggling with three tools in Painter X, I managed to create something that I'm proud of. The blender tool was a godsend for this one. Seriously, the blender tool can be defined as a sculpt tool, since I literally sculpted her face by "pushing" the colours. As you can see from my original sketch, it doesn't look exactly the same with my final artwork.

Step 1: Sketched the basic structure of the face. In this case, it doesn't look anything like my final result.

Step 2: Painted and sculpted the face. Added shadows as well to add more depth. I plotted the colours I wanted to use on the blank, unused space so that I can eyedrop them anytime I want.

Step 3: I sketched and coloured her hair all on this step. Played with shades of brown and orange to make the hair more natural. Added shadows and highlights blend it in with her face.

Step 4: I tweaked the shadows and highlights of the whole portrait here.

Final Artwork: After a bit more detailing, colouring and saturation tweaking, this is the final result.

Hope everyone understands generally how I do my digital painting. What did I learn from this? Blending is a great tool, you can start of with something and produce something completely different. It's like plasticine, just use your imagination and creative mind.

Drawing Jam - July 2008

Drawing Jam is held monthly at The Drawing Board and this one is for July. There were a couple of reference images but this pose struck my interest. I'm not all that good with full figure drawings, let alone dynamic poses, so I thought hey, why not? Yeah, I'm a bit late, but better late than never eh? Sketch and final work all digitally created with a tablet via Photoshop.

Armed with a Canon 350D and kit lens, I took some of this shots by reversing the lens which then transforms the camera into a supermacro shooting device.

Foldees.com "We Are All Geeks" Greeting Card Contest

Hi to all my loyal readers (not much I suppose, but I need all the support I can get),

Recently, I just posted my submissions for Foldees.com greeting card contest. What is Foldees, you may ask? Well, its a Malaysian greeting card portal that plans to be THE greeting card portal where you can post your designs, or purchase designs and print them out on your own personal printer. A pretty cool idea, since you choose what kind of paper you want to print it on. Personalised cards, anyone?

Anyway, on to my side of the story. The greeting card contest had just finished receiving their entries (all 73 of them) at the end of July. The theme is "We are all geeks" and contestants are supposed to design any type of card, be it a "Happy Birthday" card or "Missing You" card, with the exception that it has to be related to geeks or geekdom.

I posted two entries, and now I need your help to rate my card designs. I'm not asking for biased ratings, just a little bit of your time to rate my two designs. See, the rating system is a bit different this time, as they don't want it to be a popularity contest. So how do they deal with that? They set up a random card rating system, whereby you will have to rate the cards randomly as they come up. Think of it as a shuffled playlist you get with your music player. You can rate the cards randomly 'til you get to my cards if you want to, but if you rate all of them you get a free card sent to you. One more thing, you have to register yourself in Foldees.com so that you input your address (or not).

Without further adieu, I'll post my entries I submitted. Just a note - the otak3pagi.blogspot.com is NOT included in the design, its just my sig for this blog.

1st Entry - Geek & GPS - Thinking of You

Description
The card is a Thinking of You card, you have a guy talking about how he's a geek, and he thinks about you, but seeing that he is a geek, he's display of being thoughtful comes out in the form of his GPS-enabled PDA. Innocently, he wants to put plot you in his PDA so that he can track you. Thoughtful, yet a bit stalkerish, but that's just technology creeping up to you.

2nd Entry - Noodles for the Geek

A birthday card this time. I can relate to this card as I am a gadget freak myself, and being a geek who wants to get every gadget that comes out every few weeks, it takes a toll on your financial situation. So, what do you sacrifice? Your right to eat good food. Instant noodles are usually quite cheap and great to kill your hunger pangs. By buying gadgets, you have no choice but to buy instant noodles. Well, that's the general gist of it, so I hope you get what I'm trying to say. Anyway, the card is supposed to build anxiety and hope on the card reader, as he or she is expected to get something special, only to be served with yet another instant noodle in a cup, with just a birthday candle for to label it as "special".

Alright, those are my entries. I'm sorry about the quality of the 2nd entry as that was a very very very last minute entry but I just had to include that. Heck, i posted that at 11.59PM while on Wi-Fi in PD. I know its not an excuse and I'm guilty as charged as a procrastinator. At the very least, I got to submit it. I'll probably redo the card sometime in the future.

So, please please please, help me and support me, the more the merrier, as I'm trying to win the stuff to get extra funding for my upcoming wedding. Again, I'm not asking anyone to be biased and rate me 5, just rate according to what you think I should get. After all, I'm tired of popularity design contests myself. I want to strive to produce better art and designs. Click the image below for you to go straight to the random card rating engine.

Thanks in advance, guys and gals, and if you have rated my cards, THANK YOU VERY MUCH, I appreciate it a lot. Wish me luck, I need it. :)

Panda in Bamboo Heaven - A recomposition

My fiancee wants to order a custom rubber stamp from http://mangosteenskin.blogspot.com seeing that she creates freakishly detailed stamps, and she's keen of using my old artwork, "Action Panda"

However, the original flash design was too rough and sketchy, and she wanted more emphasis on the eyes and the omission of the gun.

I recomposed the original artwork to have a bamboo stack as the wall, and changing the gun to bamboo leaves. Same pose generally, but now its a different composition.

Here's the final result. Hope its ok to be put on the stamp. I'm pretty excited to see my own design applied as a rubber stamp.

GSTK Logo

I'm a big video gamer, and I play my Xbox360 quite a lot. One of my favourite games is Call of Duty 4 : Modern Warfare (COD4). I play the game almost every night with other Malaysians via Xbox Live, Microsoft's Xbox360-only gaming network. I laugh like hysterical hyena playing with the other funny folks, and this logo came out because of our recent trend.

In COD4, you can use the phletora of guns to kill or you can use the knife, which is no easy feat, since you're suppose to go up close and personal. If you get killed by a knife, its considered to be a humiliation to all of us in the community. One of my buddies (Shuvit a.k.a Yunus) coined the term "sapu taik" which means "smearing shit" in english. Why smear shit? Well, he says that the humiliation is so big that its like smearing shit on the (victim's) face. The phrase "sapu taik" catches on among the community and I decided to make a dedicated logo for my sapu taik adventures. Here's the signature (sig) I did for forum posts.

Its nothing much, but my plan was to put it as a signature as a joke and/or to annoy.

This one's for Emila. Grin is Emila's cute green character, so I had this idea of making an opposite of Grin, and so Dark Grin is born... on Graffiti.

Self Caricature on Graffiti

Well, that's what I thought. One of my first attempt in getting that caricature look. The funny thing is, its based on a photo of me, but after I completed this, the end result makes me like I'm a black (african-american for the politically correct) guy. Still, I enjoyed this. Starting to get a hang of the application.
